Foundation Examples

Here is a collection of Foundation Dashboards and other related examples. This collection is from a wide variety of sources, some I had on file, some I came across through online searches, and some came directly from other colleagues in the field. You’ll notice that each entry has links, snapshots, and brief descriptions/comments. One note to keep in mind as you go through the examples, each description is my own interpretation, meaning that it in no way represents anything “official” from the respective organizations and furthermore may be inaccurate (hopefully that is not the case, but just need to preface here). I encourage you to feel free to share your insights and opinions or add to the collection. Also, I am happy to add to the wiki on your behalf (send me a private message if you like!)

Best,
Christie

Quick List (jump to a Dashboard below):

Ontario Trillium Foundation Community Services Dashboard (Beta)

This Community Service BETA Dashboard comes from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This web-based dashboard uses Google sites (which means that data can be inputted from a mobile device). The purpose of this dashboard is to communicate value-added activities beyond grantmaking to both internal and external audiences.

Harvest Choice (Gates) / Harvest Choice Commodity Dashboard

This grantee dashboard come from Harvest Choice. Harvest Choice dedicated a site specifically for the Gates Foundation (Gates allocates a significant amount of funding to the organization). The site connects to a regional dashboard and a commodity dashboard highlighting key information about the regions the organization works in. Some of the graphics use Tableau (a data visualization tool) and draw upon data from numerous sources both internally and externally (FAOStat, ReSAKSS, ASTI, IFPRI, HarvestChoice). This is a nice example of a dynamic, interactive dashboard.

PrEP Program delivery costing dashboard – SOUTH AFRICA (Gates)

Here is a great example of a program delivery dashboard that comes out of Gates. This one might be out of scope from the other Dashboards posted in this area, but I think is worth mentioning. This example uses excel and is a granular in-depth unit cost analysis for the delivery of the PrEP program. This dashboard has a very specific function for the program to understand costs under different conditions and has numerous data sources.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Assessment Report 2011)

Many of the larger Foundations have annual performance reports that include a variety of snapshots of organizational performance and programmatic work. This example comes from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This report is a foundation look back and is published on a PDF on their website. Some of the data sources used include CEP, internal grantmaking data, and other external survey data from both experts in the field and grantees.

Irvine Foundation Assessment/ 2011 Annual Performance Report

Similar to RWJF, this is an annual snapshot of the Foundations past year's work. The assessment is uploaded to the Irvine website in a PDF format. Irvine uses Tableau to generate some of their graphics (some of the best I've seen in this line of work!)

New York State Health Foundation

Wallace Assessment Tool

From 2005 and might be out-of-date. Great example of how core questions and key indicators can organize and frame assesment work.

Common Wealth Fund

Information is updated periodically by year (for the most part the data comes from internal data sources). Very detailed scorecards and a great deal of user interactivity.
